Basic concepts

What is a transcript?

The written record of spoken dialogue in an audio or video.

What is transcription?

Transcription is the act of effectively listening to audio or video for the purpose of creating a properly formatted document that accurately represents what each speaker is saying to one another or an audience.

What does a transcriber do?

A transcriber is someone who listens to an audio/video file and converts it into accurate and readable text. A professional, experienced transcriber has the ability to listen to audio/video recordings paying close attention so that they can:

  • distinguish the number of people speaking
  • understand and convey the author's intended meaning
  • accurately transcribe with clarity even when the recording has background noise or feedback
  • accurately transcribe with clarity even when the speaking voices are heavily accented or mumbling

GOAL:

It is our intention that through each of our lectures you will become the best professionally trained transcriber. Now is a good time to think of all the "Yeses" for wanting a lucrative remote job. It is also a good time to write down your strengths and weaknesses in order to evaluate yourself to understand where in this course you will have to concentrate in order to be the best.

Researchers says that when we write things down, it helps people derive information from their experiences that help them guide their perceptions, actions, thoughts and emotions in the present... Clarifying purpose and meaning into the future helps improve positive emotion, which is associated with movement towards important goals and reduces threat, which is associated with uncertainty and doubt, and which may be experienced as hopelessness, despair, and lack of meaning.

Now is a good time to do a self-evaluation. Where is your state of mind right now?

Write why you are completing this course, why you need a lifestyle change or enhancement, why you want a remote career. These are your "Yeses." Keep them close by, pin them to your wall. You want to look at these when you feel like giving up so you remember the why.
